The K-Laser has been with us at the clinic now for 18 months and it has been an amazing implementation to the clinic. We have all seen amazing results with increased tissue healing, acute pain, nerve pain and chronic injuries. I have never been a clinician that uses modalities, and if you have been to Deep before you would know that we use our clinical hands on skills and knowledge to treat. I was sceptical at first but when the K laser rep came to the clinic she said that she had just come from the Toronto Blue Jays and Calgary Flames. I knew then there must have been some effectiveness in it! We trialed the laser in the clinic for 30 days, and the results we were getting from the laser in combination with our treatment skills were outstanding, and there was no turning back. The K-Laser is a Class IV Laser that produce some heat and is found in most professional sports teams around the world. It is a state of the art modality, and let me explain how the K-laser works and what it treats.

The Class IV K-Laser Therapy is an FDA cleared therapeutic treatment that manages pain and inflammation while accelerating tissue regeneration. Therapeutic lasers deliver specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of laser light to induce a photochemical reaction and therapeutic effect. During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved. Class IV Lasers are the most powerful on the market and penetrate to the depth of 10cm. At this depth cellular level increasing metabolic activity within the cell. By improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane, the increased production of cellular energy (ATP) is stimulated. The cascade of beneficial effects that follows includes increased cellular function and tissue repair.

I know that is alot of science that may or may not make much sense to some. However, the benefits are outstanding for increasing the healing time of acute soft tissue damage, bone healing time and help promote healing in chronic painful conditions. Some of conditions that may typically be treated by high power laser therapy include:

  • Peripheral Neuropathy, Fibromyalgia
  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Sciatic Pain
  • Arthritis pain, Degenerative Discs/Joints
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Knee Problems
  • Tendinitis, Trigger Fingers
  • Bunion Pains, Plantar Fasciitis • Sprains and/or Strains
  • Athletic Injuries
  • Bruises, Contusions
  • Headaches, TMJ, Sinus Trouble

Treatments last 4 – 6 mins, and as a protocol we like to treat acute conditions twice a week over a 3/4 week period. Chronic conditions are treated 3 times in the first week, twice in the following 3 weeks, and once a week for the last 3 weeks.

So what does this mean for our ongoing treatment at Deep Physio? Nothing will change 🙂 We will continue to use our skills, hands on techniques and expertise exercise programming. All we have done is added a little gem that will work along side us to promote a faster healing and recovery, as well improve those chronic, painful, pathological conditions. The laser is a non surgical/medication option that will improve pain and tissue healing. By decreasing pain your movement improves as does you psyche. This means we can get you to optimum functional faster!
